Sick Tree Diagnosis
Sick tree diagnosis requires a lot of study and years of practice. Typically it's not just one thing that kills a tree, it is a combination of things. Most trees become stressed first, from environmental factors, not enough water, too much water, or propagation changes such as, adding new soil or re-landscaping portions of the yard.
The majority of feeder roots are in the top 4 inches of the soil they start at approximately 18 inches away from the base of the tree and extend to the drip-line, additionally it goes 2/3 of the distance of the tree past the drip-line .When disrupted and stressed out the tree emits a different odor that attracts insects and they can vector fungus, resulting in a snowball effect.
A common, yet bad, technique I have seen lately is putting mulch around the base of the tree, this is not beneficial because there are no feeder roots along the base and the resulting moisture can create root rot. Bad cuts made while trimming, such as flush cuts at the base, or major limbs of a tree can cause long term damage. Each branch on a tree is self sustaining and if damaged the tree will shut itself off from the affected branch or bad cut.
All cuts should be made at the branch collar so the tree can callous properly. If a flush cut is made on the base of the tree or branch it will never heal properly. The base can not shut itself off because it will die, resulting in recesses in the base. These are always fatal down the line. If you have any questions feel free to call or email, if I can help over the phone it's always free. I have extensive knowledge of trees and most plants and grasses.
I can usually predict future growth habits and potential problems that may arise with most trees and plants. Please feel free to call me for questions regarding pruning techniques, planting new trees, saving a tree, etc.
Thanks, Michael Anderton
